On Saturday, November 14, Big Red welcomed competitors to the annual Fall Speech Contest on the Glasgow campus. Professor Patricia Witcher, who teaches both the basic course and intercultural communication for the Department of Communication at Glasgow, hosted the event. Well-organized, the event featured 23 competitors who competed in two rounds, using speeches developed in their Communication 145: Fundamentals of Public Speaking and Communication classes. Judges narrowed down the field to six.
Celebrity judges for the final round included Bill Walton, Vice-Chancellor of WKU Glasgow; Ernie Myers, Executive Vice-President of the Glasgow/Barren County Chamber of Commerce; and Dr. Helen Sterk, Head of the WKU Department of Communication.
The final round featured the top three in the Communication 145 and in the Communication 145 B (focused on business and professional speaking) classes. Representing Communication 145, Bethany Reckart (instructor: Heather Strode) took first place, with Daniel Stapp (instructor: Donna Schiess) in second and Natalie Turner (instructor: Gary Hughes) in third. For the Communication 145 B classes, Ar’meishia Burrow (instructor: Jessica McClanahan), with Jamie Cahoe (instructor: Jessica McClanahan) taking second and Sam Barnett (instructor: Gayle Allison) third.
Each first place winner took home $250; second place, $100; and third place, $50. Everyone who competed scored the high honor of being chosen by their class to represent them. Congratulations to all of the competitors!
